Wigan sits nestled alongside the River Douglas in Greater Manchester. It's name dates right back to the 7th century and quite simply means 'settlement'. Romans settled here and various items have been found to back up this claim including coins, pottery and other Roman artefacts.
It has a population of almost 100,000, it experienced a huge rise in numbers following the industrial revolution.
Mills and coal mining became the staple trades within Wigan, with most of it's inhabitants being employed by one of the two industries.
1450 saw the first of many coal mines in Wigan and there was soon to be over 1,000 mine shafts within Wigan and a 5 mile radius of the centre of town.
Wigan Pier has become a popular place for visitors both day and night. It is part of the Leeds-Liverpool ship canal and is now a busy attraction for families and revellers (at night obviously!).
The Pier itself was made even more famous by the great writer George Orwell in his popular book The Road to Wigan Pier. The book itself focused on the poverty experienced by the people of Wigan in the early 1930's when times were hard and a lot of the population were sadly very poor.

People from Wigan are well known for their love of pies and sometimes referred to as 'pie eaters'. Far from being a derogatory term, this harks back to the days of the miners. In 1926 there was the General Strike. Wigan miners were forced back into working the mines and thought to eat 'humble pie' - hence the term.
